How Dangerous Is a Sewage Backup? Here's What to Do First

Have a sewage backup? The most important thing right now is knowing what to do (and what NOT to do) in the next few minutes.

If you've just discovered sewage backing up into your home, take a breath. It's a scary situation - but you're going to get through it.

We get a lot of calls that are right ‘in the moment’, as in you walked down into your basement, you are hit with a putrid smell and you see dark, murky ooze bubbling up from your floor drain. Or worse, you walk into the bathroom in the finished portion of your home and your toilet is overflowing… and not because you flushed it. Well, we’re here to tell you to take a deep breath (perhaps not in your basement!), grab a clothespin for your nose, and we’ll tackle this together. The most important thing right now is knowing what to do (and what NOT to do) in the next few minutes.

First thing is Absolutely First: Call a Drain Company

If you’re dealing with a sewage issue, you need to figure out what is causing the issue before we can come clean it up. Quite obviously, you don’t want this happening again! So, you need to figure out the source by having a drain company come take a look. Did tree roots grow through the pipes? Are your flushable wipes not truly flushable?! (this is a common issue!) We have a few drain companies in Greater Boston that do great work, so always feel free to

           give us a call

           if you need a recommendation.

So... How Dangerous Is It Really?

If we’re being honest, we don’t want to sugarcoat it. While we know you’re looking for that article that tells you it’s really not that bad, that just isn’t the case. It’s pretty dangerous. We are telling you so that you take it seriously, because you need to! Sewage isn't just dirty water. It contains bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can make people, children, and pets very sick. The CDC lists E. coli, Hepatitis A, Salmonella, and Norovirus among the health risks associated with sewage exposure. Even just touching it - or simply breathing in the air around it - can put you and your family at risk.

Kids, elderly family members, and anyone with a weakened immune system are especially vulnerable. So please, keep everyone away from the affected area until it's been properly cleaned up, and we don’t mean by just grabbing your mop.

          Should You Stay or Leave?

It depends on how bad it is. If the backup is small - say, just one floor drain - and you can completely avoid that area by closing it off from the rest of the house, you may be okay to stay. If sewage has spread across your basement, multiple rooms, or you can smell it throughout the house, you need to stay somewhere else until a professional has taken care of it. Either way, first thing’s first: stop using all water in the house right now. No toilets, no sinks, no dishwasher. Using your plumbing can potentially push even more sewage into your home.

Here's Our Quick List of What to Do First

          1. Stop all water use immediately.

No flushing, no running faucets, no laundry. You need to stop using everything until the problem is fixed.

          2. Keep people and pets away from the area.

Block it off however you can. This stuff is not something you want anyone wandering into. If you can smell sewage throughout your home, you should not stay in the home.

          3. Don't try to clean it up yourself.

We know it's tempting to just grab some gloves and get to work - but regular cleaning supplies aren't enough to disinfect sewage contamination. You need professional equipment, disinfectants, and training for this one.

          4. Open some windows if you can.

Sewage can release harmful gases in enclosed spaces. A little fresh air helps while you wait for help to arrive.

          5. Call a remediation professional right away.

The sooner the better. Sewage damage spreads fast - and to make matters worse, mold can start developing in as little as 24 to 48 hours. Quick action saves a lot of headache (and money) down the road, and you can start getting the area cleaned and dried out right away.

          6. Call your insurance company.

Coverage for sewage backups varies, so make sure to check your policy. Take photos of everything before any cleanup begins to document the damage to your home and belongings - your insurance company will want documentation. Not sure what to document?

           Give us a call

           - We’re happy to walk you through it!

          Why Did This Happen?

Good question - and worth knowing so you can prevent it in the future. The most common causes of sewage backups include:

Tree roots growing into sewer lines

Buildup from pouring grease down the drain, using flushable wipes (they aren’t actually flushable), or other debris clogging the main line

Heavy rainfall overwhelming the sewer system (a real potential issue here in Quincy and along the South Shore during storm season)

Older or damaged pipes that have cracked or collapsed over time

If your home is older or you've had slow drains for a while, it may be worth having your sewer line inspected once things are back to normal to see if you might be able to take a more proactive approach towards preventing sewage backups in the future!

          The Bottom Line

A sewage backup is one of those emergencies where waiting just makes everything worse. The faster you act, the less damage there is - to your home and to your family's health.

How to Unfreeze Pipes & Melt Ice Dams - The Safe Way

What do you need to do to address freezing pipes and ice dams in ways that prevent damage to your home (or yourself!)?? Learn more about how to protect your home!

The fickle winters in the Boston area always have a way of catching people off guard. Temperatures fluctuate… snow melts… then refreezes leaving you skating across your porch and wondering if big sheets of ice are going to come tumbling off of your roof.

And while one day it’s 45, the next night the temperature plunges, and suddenly you’re dealing with frozen pipes or heavy ice forming along your roofline.

These issues are very common for homeowners in Northeast & Boston - But, just because they’re common doesn’t mean everyone knows how to handle them in a safe way. We’ve answered several calls dealing with these issues recently and some of the attempts at DIY thawing & prevention are downright dangerous! We thought we’d let you know what you need to do to address freezing pipes and ice dams in ways that prevent damage to your home (or yourself!)

          Yes, Let Your Faucet Drip!

The water in the pipes inside your home is a pressurized system. When you turn on a faucet, the pressure forces the water out of the faucet and water flows right into your home to replace it, consistently keeping the system under pressure. When water freezes inside a pipe, it expands. That expansion increases internal pressure, and it’s the

          pressure

           - not just the ice - that causes pipes to crack or burst (and subsequently for water to continue to spray out of the cracked pipe.

Allowing a faucet to drip during extreme cold keeps water moving and helps relieve that pressure buildup.

Letting your faucets drip and keeping cabinet doors open during freezing temperatures can absolutely reduce your risk of pipes freezing. We know some of you are thinking “I can’t just waste water like that, my bill is going to be ridiculous!” The small increase in your water bill is far less expensive than replacing insulation, drywall, or flooring! It’s a simple step that can prevent thousands of dollars in water damage restoration.

Heat Tape / Pipe Heating Cable is Fantastic Prevention

For homes with exposed plumbing in basements, crawl spaces, garages, or along foundation walls, heat tape - also known as pipe heating cable - can be a practical solution. Pipe heating cable is commonly available at local hardware stores or right on Amazon. It is an electric cable designed to wrap around metal or rigid plastic pipes. Many include built-in thermostats that activate around 37–38°F and automatically shut off as temperatures rise.

          They are particularly useful for:

Pipes in these parts of your home can get colder than the ambient temperature of the house, putting them at risk for freezing and bursting. By wrapping them with heating cable, you can give yourself some nice peace of mind knowing that those pipes are much less likely to freeze! We would like to note - Improper installation can create electrical or fire hazards. If you aren’t sure what you’re doing, professional installation is recommended.

How do I melt an Ice Dam?

Ice dams develop when snow melts on warmer portions of the roof and refreezes along the colder eaves. That ridge of ice blocks drainage of water from the roof, causing water to back up under the shingles and into the home. Ice dams can lead to interior water damage, insulation saturation, structural deterioration, and mold growth if not addressed.

Older homes with inconsistencies in ventilation and insulation often can contribute to the problem. But regardless of the cause, what do you do when it happens?! Let’s start with what NOT to do.

What Not to Do: Hammers, Chisels, and Blow Torches

What do you do when there’s a giant block of ice on your roof? Your initial reaction might think that a hammer and chisel might be a good idea. Unfortunately, chipping ice with a hammer or chisel, or peeling ice off the roof that is frozen to the shingles or flashing, often results in damage to your shingles, flashing, and gutters. This damage often leads to further water damage in the home by increasing potential access points, and those repairs may cost more than the damage caused by the ice dam would have.

So, what about a blow torch? The answer again is a solid NO. Heating equipment that introduces open flames near roofing materials significantly increases your fire risk. People have burned down their entire homes attempting this! But don’t worry - There are better, safer, more simple ways to address ice dams.

The Safer Way to Address Ice Dams

Don’t worry, there is a solution that doesn’t involve an open flame or chipping away at a gigantic ice block on your roof all afternoon! Here’s what we’d suggest:

          For short-term relief:

          • Use calcium chloride (not rock salt, which will damage your roof)
• Fill a sock or pantyhose with it
• Lay it perpendicular across the ice dam, with the end hanging slightly off of the roof to create a drainage channel - While this method does not remove the ice dam, it allows the trapped water to escape without damaging roofing materials.

          • Apply several channels space out for better drainage.

For longer-term prevention:

          • Improve attic insulation
• Improve roof ventilation
• Remove snow from roof edges with a roof rake
• Consider professionally installed heat cables along the eaves if this continues to be an ongoing issue despite other repairs.

          Why Early Action Matters

Issues resulting from frozen pipes and ice dams don’t stay minor for long. Once water enters your walls or ceilings, it spreads quickly, and you can be dealing with a mold growth issue soon after that. If you have had issues with ice dams or frozen pipes in the past, a little prevention this winter could really go a long way in preventing major damage.

Happy Holidays, the season is upon us! We know there’s a lot to think about before a holiday trip - packing, travel plans, last-minute gifts. But before you even touch that suitcase, we wanted to take a minute to give you a few tips to protect your home from emergencies while you’re away! Around here in Quincy, Boston, and towns like Weymouth, winter brings more than just snow - it brings frozen pipes, damp basements, and the occasional sewer backup that nobody wants to come home to. While right now the weather seems like it’s going back and forth between 60 degrees F and freezing, the unpredictability often creeps up on people. We’ve been called in far too many times for water remediation and flood damage cleanup during the holidays. So here’s what we’d want

What to Do When a Pipe Bursts in Your House

Few things cause a person to panic like hearing water gushing from in a wall in your house. Here's what to do step by step, and if you need help give us a call!

Few things cause a person to panic quite like hearing water gushing from somewhere in a wall in your house. While burst pipes are certainly more common during our cold winters in Quincy & Weymouth, they can just happen because of an aging home in need of repairs at any time of the year.

No matter where you are, damage from a burst pipe can escalate quickly. Knowing what to do in those first few critical minutes can make the difference between a manageable mess and a costly disaster requiring major water damage restoration. We help homeowners across the South Shore deal with these kinds of emergencies, and the biggest takeaway is this: quick thinking matters. Here’s how to act fast, minimize damage, and get your home on the quickest path to recovery.

Step 1: Shut Off the Water Supply

When you hear gushing water, your first move should be to stop the flow of water into your home. Most homes have a main shut-off valve in the basement or where the water line enters the house. If you don’t know where yours is, now is the time to find out! Turning off the water can immediately slow the damage, giving you valuable time before calling in professional help. Our caveat to turning off the water would be *

AS LONG AS IT IS SAFE TO DO SO

*. Don’t go into a flooded basement with electrical wires potentially risking your safety! If there’s an electrical concern, turn off the electricity FIRST, then return to Step 1 and turn off the water supply!

Step 2: Turn Off the Electricity (ONLY If It’s Safe)

Water and electricity don’t mix. If water is even remotely close to your outlets, appliances, or wiring, shut off the power in the affected area if it’s safe to do so. If the basement or other flooded space feels unsafe, stay out until a professional can evaluate the situation. If you have an electrical safety concern involving water, your first call should be to National Grid or your local utility service provider so that they can offer emergency service, or shut down your electricity from the outside of your home. Their emergency lines are:

Step 3: Drain and Relieve Pressure

This is a step that is often forgotten, but can continue to add to the damage that a broken pipe can cause. After you have shut down the water to your home, make sure to flush your toilets and open all of the faucets to relieve any remaining water pressure from the system. This lets out any remaining water in the pipes and can prevent further leaks while you wait for repairs.

Step 4: Document the Damage for Insurance

Before you start cleanup, grab your phone and take photos or videos of everything. Insurance companies will want proof of damage, and proper documentation will help speed up your claim. One of the most common reasons that insurance claims get denied is because of insufficient documentation. The

Step 5: Begin Cleanup and Drying

Mop up standing water and remove soaked rugs or belongings to prevent further damage. A Shop-Vac, if you have one, is your best friend! (Borrow one from a neighbor!!) The longer that water and moisture sits, the more likely it is to grow mold. Depending on conditions, mold can potentially grow within 24-48 hours of water exposure, so the sooner you start drying, the better! Fans, dehumidifiers, and open windows (if weather allows) can help, but large-scale flooding often requires professional equipment and expertise. While many homeowners have the best intentions, the equipment that people often have in their home just isn’t enough to get the area dried out in an expedited fashion. That’s where having a

Step 6: Call a Professional for Flood Damage Cleanup

While we’d love to tell you “You can do this all yourself!” it unfortunately is just not the case. It’s easy to have water or moisture still remaining behind a wall that you will have no way of knowing is there unless you have the right tools. Left alone, moisture like this can lead to a big mold problem. Additionally, the equipment that a flood cleanup company will have will be commercial-sized, allowing for rapid drying of an area where a regular house-sized dehumidifier just isn’t going to do the trick. An attempt at DIY drying of an area often results in a half-dry area days later with mold starting to grow. Addressed properly and promptly, damage is minimized and so are your expenses!

          Prevention Tips for the Future

Burst pipes are often preventable. Here are a few simple precautions that you can take during the upcoming cold months here in Massachusetts:

Insulate pipes in unheated areas like basements, garages, or crawlspaces. If they can’t be insulated, make sure that your basement stays above 55 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent pipes from freezing particularly when the temperature drops overnight.

Let faucets drip during extreme cold snaps to keep water moving (especially overnight!)

Keep your thermostat consistent - even at night or when you’re away.

Have your home evaluated for older piping that may be at risk of breaking, and perform routine checks if you have an older home.

Going out of town? Shut off the water to your washing machine! These pipes can cause leaks that can do major damage over a long weekend, and it's an easy step to take towards preventing major leaks that go unnoticed for days, particularly in the winter!

Water has a way of sneaking into places it doesn’t belong - like your basement. And whether you’re in an old family home in Dedham, a rental in Hingham, or a brownstone in Boston, one small leak can turn into a big, expensive problem if you're not paying attention.

If you’ve lived in Stoughton or anywhere in the Greater Boston area during the rainy season, you know one thing for sure: water has a way of sneaking into places it doesn’t belong - like your basement.

And whether you’re in an old family home in Dedham, a rental in Hingham, or a brownstone in Boston, one small leak can turn into a big, expensive problem if you're not paying attention. We’ve seen everything from tiny puddles after a rainstorm to full-blown flooding from storm surges and backed-up gutters. The takeaway? A little prep goes a long way. Here are a few smart (and financially realistic) ways to help protect your basement and belongings before you find yourself Googling “flood damage cleanup” at 2 am.

Check Your Slope (and Your Gutters While You're at It)

One of the first things we tell folks is to check how the ground around their house is sloping. Water should run away from your foundation - not toward it. We know this probably sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many homes in South Shore neighborhoods have settled over the years and now slope in the wrong direction just enough to cause issues.

And your gutters? If they’re clogged or the downspouts aren’t extended far enough, all that rainwater can potentially pour right back towards your foundation. These are often prime locations for leaks that make their way through cracks in your foundation and become hidden puddles and/or mold growth in your basement. Make sure your gutter downspouts push water at least 4 - 6 feet away from your house to give it a chance to move in the right direction. Bonus points if you check them and clean out leaves and debris every spring and fall!

          Sealing Cracks Is Cheap Insurance

If your basement has cracks in the concrete or along the wall joints, it’s a prime invitation for water damage. Even the tiniest hairline crack can let in moisture, especially in humid months (looking at you, June in Boston), and these cracks will become worse over time if water is flowing through them. Quick patch jobs using hydraulic cement or sealant can save you major money and water damage restoration down the line.

          We always say

: if you're seeing moisture and you don't know where it's coming from,

Don't Rely on Luck - Install That Sump Pump!

Basements flood. It’s what they do! And when it does, having a sump pump is the difference between a manageable mess and a major insurance claim.

sump pump is more than a nice-to-have - it’s a must. With the help of a water mitigation company to help you find the right location in your basement, installing a sump pump is a fairly inexpensive way to have more peace of mind. We highly recommend getting the kind that has a battery back-up just in case... We’ve seen too many people think they were safe, only to lose power during a storm and end up with a swimming pool under their house!

Even if your basement stays dry, it might still feel damp. This feeling of dampness is the perfect setup for mold, musty odors, and long-term damage to whatever you’re storing down there.

Sometimes, a leaky basement isn’t just about cracks or bad gutters. If water keeps coming in, it may be time for professional water remediation. That could mean waterproofing the exterior of your foundation, installing a French drain, or dealing with hydrostatic pressure.

Working in water damage repair, we see what look like tiny water issues in homes and local businesses turn into major, costly problems. And with storm season becoming more unpredictable around Greater Boston, knowing when (and why) to take action can protect your home and your wallet.

We get a lot of questions about why water shouldn’t be allowed to sit, and what really happens when you let it. When it comes to flooding we’ll say it again and again - quick action isn’t just smart, it’s essential for protecting your home and your family!

          1. Mold Grows & Moves Fast - Really Fast

If you think mold takes a while to settle in, think again. According to the

, mold can begin growing within only 24 to 48 hours of water exposure. Once it’s established, it spreads behind walls, under floors, and inside insulation - places you may not even realize are affected, and places that make it extra hard to clean up! While mold really may just seem like an inconvenience, its health impacts can be substantial for people living in the home. It can impact your indoor air quality and cause serious health issues, especially for people with asthma, allergies, or compromised immune systems.

          2. Structural Damage Sneaks Up on You

That small puddle in the basement might not seem like a big deal, but the reality is: water weakens wood, drywall, and even concrete foundation over time. Once rot or warping begins, your home’s structure can become compromised. Water can also soak into these materials and be difficult to extract, creating prime environments for mold to flourish once penetrated.

Water damage that isn’t addressed quickly can result in damage so severe it affects the integrity of your floors, walls, and foundation - especially if the water is contaminated (think sewer backups or stormwater). 3. Health Risks Lurk in Contaminated Waters

Beyond structural concerns, floodwaters often carry unseen dangers. Contaminated water can harbor bacteria, chemicals, and other hazardous substances that pose serious health risks upon contact or ingestion. The longer this water sits in your home or business, the worse this contamination can get and the more infiltration can happen into your home, air ducts, and personal belongings. In the South Shore, we are often concerned about flood water but don’t always think about the potential for contamination. However, just because the water isn’t from a sewage source doesn’t mean that it isn’t contaminated! The

There’s something a lot of homeowners don’t realize: While as a water remediation and water damage repair company we find ourselves saying “act quickly!” constantly, we are not the only ones that will tell you that time is of the essence. Insurance companies often require you to act quickly when water damage happens, and the type of damage may also determine whether your homeowner’s insurance will cover anything at all. An unfortunate recent example of this is the impact of

While as a water damage repair company we are always here to help you in the event of a flood, taking preventive steps before a storm hits can save you thousands in repairs. So, what are some of the best practices for protecting your home from coastal flooding, and what do you do if your property experiences water damage? Here are a few of our best tips!

          1. Know Your Flood Risk Before a Storm Hits

Not all homes in the South Shore are equally vulnerable to flooding. Some areas, like Hull’s beachfront neighborhoods and low-lying parts of Marshfield, are in high-risk flood zones. Other inland locations may be at a lower risk, but sometimes even inland locations can be in flood zones due to salt marshes and other waterways that can flood.

How to Check Your Flood Risk:

           Use

           FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center

to see if your home is in a high-risk flood zone. You may also already have this information, because as a homeowner living in a high risk flood area you may be required already to have flood insurance on your property! However, if you do live near the coast, assume storm surges could impact your property even if you’re not in an official flood zone. If you have just bought a new home in the area and aren’t sure about the history of your property, FEMA or your new flood insurance company should also be able to tell you a history of claims. This can also help you determine your future risk, as if your home has flooded multiple times in the past, you may want to take some extra steps towards protecting it from future damage!

Fun Fact: FEMA reports that just one inch of floodwater can cause up to $25,000 in damages. With the rising costs of construction and the extent of damage and potential subsequent mold issues caused by flooding, we would predict that unfortunately this number only stands to increase over time! Without proper flood insurance, homeowners may be responsible for all water damage repair costs.

          2. Elevate and Seal Your Home’s Foundation

Coastal homes are at higher risk for basement flooding, especially in places like Scituate and Hingham, where storm surges can push seawater into homes at high tide. One of the best ways to reduce flood damage is to elevate and seal your home’s foundation. According to

, waterproofing your basement will likely run between 4500-10k depending on your contractor and where you live. However, if you’ve seen your fair share of flooding already, this may be a great investment towards protecting your home and preventing future issues that come with repeated flooding. Considering a home remodel? Your town or city may actually require you to remodel the home above a specific elevation in order to prevent future flooding, but even if not this may be a great time to consider doing so.

Apply a waterproof sealant to your basement foundation and walls.

If you don’t have one, install a sump pump to remove excess water during storms.

          3. Invest in Flood Barriers and Sandbags

If you live in a high-risk flood zone in the South Shore, having flood barriers and sandbags on hand can help protect your home when water levels rise and threaten coming in through your home’s entryways. In the right situation, having some of these supplies on hand can save you thousands of dollars in damage.

Some flood protection tools to consider:

Water-activated flood barriers – These expand when wet to create a barrier against incoming water.

Traditional sandbags – A simple, affordable, effective option for blocking doorways and garage entrances.

Flood shields for doors and windows – These metal or plastic panels that provide extra protection for entry points.

House flood vents - Also called hydrostatic vents, in high flood risk areas these can help protect your foundation by allowing water to pass through, therefore reducing pressure on your home structures.

          4. Maintain Your Gutters and Drains

One of the simplest but most effective ways to prevent water damage is to keep your gutters and storm drains clear. Blocked drains can force rainwater to pool around your home’s foundation, increasing the risk of flood damage.

Tips on Keeping Your Drainage System Ready:

Clean your gutters before storm season to remove debris.

Check downspouts and make sure they direct water at least 6 feet away from your home.

Keep street drains clear - report clogged storm drains to your local public works department.

An Elevation Certificate is a document that provides detailed information about your property's elevation relative to the estimated height floodwaters might reach in a major flood. This certificate is crucial for determining flood insurance premiums, as well as verifying compliance with local building codes. Before commissioning a new survey, you can check with property records to see if there may already be an elevation certificate on file, or you can also hire a land surveyor to authorize this for you. Most homeowners assume flood damage is covered by their insurance - but that’s usually not the case. Standard homeowner’s policies typically do NOT cover flood damage unless it is caused by some sort of plumbing malfunction within your home. However, if flood water from a storm comes into your home, homeowner’s insurance policies typically will not cover this kind of damage.

We thought this would be a valuable topic to chat more about, especially with the very cold weather still lingering here in Quincy and Greater Boston. With the rising cost of heating homes, as well as the often old electrical in our old Boston-area homes, sometimes people can get creative with how they try to stay warm… And it’s always worth having a discussion about fire safety! A fair share of home fires are actually caused by preventable issues. Whether it’s an electrical issue, an unattended candle, or cooking gone wrong, understanding the most common causes of house fires can help protect your home and family.

The #1 cause of house fires is cooking-related accidents. From 2018 to 2022, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated annual average of 336,848 home structure fires, with cooking being a significant contributor.

of home fire injuries during 2015-2019, often due to unattended cooking, grease flare-ups, or flammable items too close to the stove. Here are a few of our best tips for preventing them:

Always stay in the kitchen.

We know. It’s hard. You always have so many things to do, and multi-tasking while cooking might save you some time. But make sure you don’t get distracted, especially when frying or broiling.

          Keep flammable items away.

Keeping your kitchen tidy might just save it from a fire! Dish towels, paper towels, wooden utensils, and curtains should be far from the stove.

          Control grease.

If oil starts smoking, turn off the heat immediately. Grease, unlike other fires, cannot be extinguished by water. Water can actually make the flames spread. If you know your fire is a grease fire, extinguish it with a lid, baking soda, or fire extinguisher.

Have a fire extinguisher nearby.

A small kitchen fire extinguisher rated for grease and electrical fires (Class K) can help prevent small flames from turning into a disaster.

          Teach your kids.

Teaching your kids about safety in the kitchen is critical to keeping them safe and keeping your home safe. A toy thrown the wrong direction towards a burning stove can easily become a big problem. Including your kids in kitchen activities and teaching them about stove and oven safety can go a long way in keeping your home and family safe!

          Don’t overload outlets.

Plugging too many devices into one outlet or using multiple extension cords can lead to overheating. If anything of your cords feel hot, unplug them immediately.

Check for frayed or damaged cords.

If you notice exposed wires or a cord that feels hot, replace it immediately or unplug it.

          Use surge protectors.

Protect expensive electronics and appliances from power surges that could cause a fire.

Schedule an electrical inspection.

If you live in an older home, have a licensed electrician inspect your wiring for safety. If you just moved into a new home, get the electrical checked!

Before anything else, make sure your home is safe. What exactly do we mean? Water damage can bring electrical hazards, slippery surfaces, and even bacterial and hazardous contamination if the water is from a sewer backup. Here’s what we suggest:

Turn off the electricity in the affected area if it’s safe to do so.

If water is near electrical outlets or appliances, avoid entering the area until a professional deems it safe.

Wear protective gear like gloves, boots, or other protective clothing if you must enter the flooded area.

If the water is from a sewer backup or flooding, avoid contact with it, as it may contain harmful bacteria or contaminants.

If flooding is from a storm, use sandbags or other barriers to prevent more water from entering your home. Sandbags can be a great proactive purchase if you live in a coastal town where flooding has occurred in the past.

Before you start any cleaning or removal of water, take photos and videos of EVERYTHING. This documentation is critical for filing an insurance claim, and they will absolutely ask you for proof of your flood and damage. Make sure to:

Many homeowners’ policies cover water damage caused by accidental events that happen in the home, such as a burst pipe or leaking shower. However, coverage for flooding from natural waterways or ocean water may require separate flood insurance.

Depending on where you are located on the South Shore, it is quite possible that you live in a flood plain and are already familiar with Flood Insurance requirements in your area. If this is the case, being prepared with photographic evidence of the flood you experience will make your insurance claim process that much smoother.

          Start Water Removal and Drying

Removing water and drying the area quickly is crucial to prevent mold growth, which can begin within 24-48 hours. Steps to take:

Use a wet/dry vacuum or pumps to remove standing water. Don’t have a ShopVac? In the neighborly fashion of Greater Boston, you may be able to request the use of one from a neighbor, post on a neighborhood forum or local Buy Nothing group, or pick one up at your local hardware store. Rather than going bucket by bucket, this will make your job a LOT quicker and easier, so find one asap or purchase one proactively when you can!

Open windows and doors to increase ventilation, if weather allows. The quicker you can get the area dried out, the better.

Improve airflow and speed up drying with fans and a dehumidifier. These are also supplies that we would suggest having ‘just in case’. A dehumidifier can be frequently handy even if you don’t have a flood in your house, and these items may be a pain to rush and go buy in the event of a flood. Thinking ahead can save you a lot of time and money in the long run!

For larger-scale water damage, professional equipment may be necessary. If you’re looking at sitting water and wondering how on earth you’re going to get it out of your house,

How to Spot Mold Before It Becomes a Problem in Your Home

Here are our best tips for identifying a mold issue (sometimes before you can even see it), and stopping it in its tracks.

Mold is one of the most common & sneaky problems that can wreak havoc in your home.

Unfortunately, by the time a mold infestation becomes obvious, the damage is already done, leading to costly repairs and potential health issues. As a homeowner, learning to spot mold early can save you significant time, money, and stress. We thought we’d take this opportunity to go through some of the basics, and additionally some of our best tips to identify mold before it becomes a major problem. At Atlantic Water Remediation, we frequently see firsthand how mold can grow unnoticed until it causes major problems. Everything seems fine one week when you go into your basement, and the next week, all of your belongings are green! So, how do we catch it?

What Is Mold, and Why Does It Grow in Homes?

Let’s start with a little Mold 101. Mold is a fungus that reproduces & spreads through homes and properties by releasing spores into the air, which then settle on other surfaces. If the conditions are right, those mold spores will grow in their new location. Mold THRIVES in a moist, humid environment (think about some of the really warm Springs we’ve had over the last few years here in the South Shore & Greater Boston). Common causes of mold growth include but are not limited to:

          Leaks:

Plumbing issues such as old plumbing fixtures, or roof leaks that can create moisture spots in your home, potentially hidden behind a wall.

           Humidity:

Coastal communities like those in the South Shore, where humidity levels often run high, are particularly prone to mold.

           Flooding:

Even small amounts of standing water can lead to mold growth if not addressed quickly, or worse if they leave standing water unseen behind walls or fixtures.

           Condensation:

Poorly insulated windows such as those in older homes, pipes, or HVAC systems can create moist environments ideal for mold.

Catching mold early can make a huge difference - Instead of cleaning mold off of all your surfaces and belongings, you might be able to address a specific section of your home and put preventative measures in place that stop the spread in its tracks! Here are the key signs to look out for:

          Musty Odor

Think of that old, musty furniture smell, or perhaps that damp, unpleasant basement smell. Trust your nose - Mold often produces a smell even before you can see it. If certain areas of your home—like the basement, attic, or under-sink cabinets - start to smell damp or earthy, mold may be the culprit, and may already be present.

Discoloration on Walls, Ceilings, or Wood

Mold can appear as black, green, or even white spots on surfaces. It’s often mistaken for dirt or soot, and can be hard to spot on surfaces like concrete, or fieldstone that is common in Greater Boston basements. In areas prone to moisture, like bathrooms or basements, keep an eye out for discoloration or staining on drywall, ceilings, or tile grout.

          Water Stains or Damage

If you notice water stains on your walls or ceilings, there’s a very good chance mold is growing behind that surface. These stains may appear yellow, brown, or even just slightly darker than the surrounding area. If you’re seeing what you think are water stains, but the stains don’t dry or go away, you might be actually seeing mold.

Peeling or Bubbling Paint or Wallpaper

Moisture trapped beneath paint or wallpaper can lead to peeling, bubbling, warping, and cracking. Gaps in wood siding, older shingles that have gaps, or old flashing can lead to water entering your home or business, particularly during stormy weather. You may see signs of dampness on outer walls, but sometimes water can travel down rafters making it tricky to determine where the source of water is coming from. Bubbly paint or a wet wall can be an early indicator of mold hiding beneath the surface.

Even if mold isn’t visible, you or your family members may experience health symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, or worsening asthma or allergies that just don’t seem to be caused by the typical cold or flu. If you find yourself or your kids experiencing symptoms that don’t seem to be resolving (they may appear to be worsening), these symptoms could be caused by mold spores circulating in the air. You can learn more about mold’s potential health effects from the

          Prevention is Key

We know this sounds cliché, but the best way to deal with mold is to stop it before it starts. Here are a few simple things you can do to prevent mold before it has a chance of taking hold in your home:

          Keep Humidity Low

Keep the humidity level in your home and basement below 50%. The easiest way to do this is with a dehumidifier, which you can easily connect to drain into a drain, sump pump, or laundry sink for ongoing drainage. We love the ongoing draining option mainly because the easier it is for you, the more likely it will solve your issue - If you have to constantly empty your dehumidifier, there’s a chance that you don’t do it and end up with a mold problem anyway. The simpler you can make this for yourself, the better!

Fix Leaks as Soon as You See Them

Address plumbing or roof leaks as soon as you notice them. Even a small drip can lead to significant mold growth over time. If, due to affordability issues, you aren’t able to fix it right away, do everything possible to air out and dry out the area as much as you possibly can. While this may not work, leaving your wall or floor soaked with water poses far more hazards and likelihood of mold taking hold.

          Maintain Good Ventilation

Ensure good airflow in your home, particularly in moisture-prone areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. Open your windows every day (yes, even when it’s cold out!) Also, make sure your exhaust fans are on when cooking or showering.

          Waterproof Your Basement

Basements are particularly vulnerable to mold due to the potential for groundwater to seep in, or find its way through cracks in an old foundation. Proper waterproofing, sump pumps, and drainage can help keep your basement dry.

Make Sure Wet Areas are Dried Quickly

Whether it’s a spill, condensation, or flooding, make sure to dry wet areas within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.

and a long-time resident of Quincy, Massachusetts. Like many of you, I’ve seen my fair share of storm surges and basement flooding over the years. Owning property in a coastal community like the South Shore has its perks - beautiful views, great neighbors, and the charm of our historic towns. But it also comes with challenges. From heavy winds, rainstorms and nor’easters to high tides and plumbing mishaps in old homes, water damage is something many of us here in the South Shore are all too familiar with.

I started Atlantic Water Remediation because I saw a real need for affordable, reliable, and local water damage and restoration services. Too often, I’ve seen friends, family, and neighbors dealing with expensive damage to their homes and businesses, only to turn to big-box companies for help. These companies often don’t understand our unique challenges—they’re not from here, they don’t live here, and sometimes it feels like they’re just here to cash in. They charge an arm and a leg, and their service often lacks that personal touch we value so much in our communities.

As a local, I know the area. I know what it’s like to worry about water creeping into your basement during a storm or how devastating a small house fire can feel. I’ve been in your shoes, and I’ve worked hard to build a business that prioritizes the things that matter most: affordability, prompt service, and a real understanding of our community.

Along the way, I realized there’s a lot of confusion about how to handle water, fire, mold, and sewage damage. It’s not always easy to know when you can tackle an issue yourself and when you need to call in the pros. That’s why I decided to start this blog. Here, I’ll share practical advice, tips, and insights for dealing with the most common issues we see particularly in the South Shore and Greater Boston area: flooding, storm damage, fire and smoke damage, mold, and even sewage backups. While some situations absolutely require professional help, there are plenty of steps you can take as a homeowner or business owner to minimize damage and protect your property.
